A 34-year-old man who drank rum while carrying teenagers in his car has admitted drink-driving.

Christopher Beauman was arrested after being reported by a 15-year-old girl he had picked up.

Beauman had also picked up three other teenagers while driving round drinking most of a bottle of rum.

A breathalyser test showed a reading of 81, with the legal limit being 35.

He will be sentenced on April 13 after the preparation of a probation report.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, at 4.39pm on February 20, police were called by the girl who reported that a driver had been drinking and was at Corkhill’s garage in Onchan.

When police arrived, the 15-year-old pointed out Beauman who was sitting in the driver’s seat of a Mercedes.

He failed a breathalyser test and a near empty bottle of Captain Morgan’s rum was found in the footwell of the car along with an unconsumed four-pack of cider.

The girl said that Beauman had picked her up in School Road in Onchan and he already had two other teenagers in his car.

He then drove to the Manx Co-op in Onchan and bought the rum and cider. He then offered the drink to the girl, saying: ’It won’t do any harm’.

Beauman then picked up yet another teenager and drove to McDonald’s on Peel Road to buy some coke.

He told the youngsters: ’If I’m going to have a drink I need something to mix it with.’

When the girl said he shouldn’t be drinking, he replied: ’I can handle it.’

While Beauman was in McDonald’s toilet the girl said that two of the other teenagers poured more rum into the plastic cup Beauman was drinking from.

He then drove the group to Corkhill’s, asking: ’Shall we get more drink?’

Bail was granted in the sum of £250.
