Enterprising mother-of-two Carla Quick has launched a new online-based business after being hit by a chronic illness.

Carla, 40, had to quit her career working in life assurance because she could no longer work a normal ’nine to five’ job.

Carla was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, a chronic condition that causes constant pain and fatigue.

Although there’s no cure there are treatments available to ease the condition.

Carla was looking for a way to keep busy which allows her to work around her illness . . . and her two children, Gemma, six, and James,10.

She found the answer in Rainbow Rock, an online ’gift shop’ selling items such as handbags, scarves, jewellery and make-up.

The business ie only one month old. It is fully registered with Carla as sole trader and canbe found through Facebook. Carla is aiming to get her website up and running this month. She sources goods to sell from wholesalers in the UK through the internet.

Originally from Essex, Carla moved to the island with her family when she was in her teens. She attended Castle Rushen High School.

Carla worked in life assurance for 20 years - most recently with Royal Skandia which was then rebranded as Old Mutual International.

She lives in Lonan with her husband Simon, 44, who works in IT at an island gaming company.

She told Business News: ’I felt I was not ready for the scrapheap just yet. I’m loving getting involved in this new business. Obviously these are early days but I’m already getting some good feedback and I’m chuffed with the response so far. I’ve also had a lot of support from friends and family.’

Carla, who has her own business plan, is a member of a Facebook support group for people who have Fibromyalgia in the island. She said: ’I’m a doer. I’m not one for sitting around and I’m not very good with daytime TV.’
