Football: Corinthians seek Christian salvation as Royal's title hopes go for a Burden

in Football

Four goals in 11 minutes saw Corinthians turn their Regency Travel Women’s League match with Douglas Royal totally on its head.

The Whites’ late blitz saw them come from two goals down to secure a 4-2 victory and move to within one win of a record sixth league title.

The Ballafletcher derby has always provided drama and entertainment and Thursday evening’s game was no different.

A potential title decider, Royal only needed a draw and got off to a dream start when Rebecca Cole gave them the lead on 19 minutes, cutting in from the left before driving an angled shot into the net.

Royal, who packed the midfield, gave Corinthians little room to manoeuvre in the opening 45, the latter finding it difficult to break down a well-organised Royal defence. Holly Stephens came close to adding a second for Royal with a long-range speculative strike that struck the woodwork.

Corinthians starting the second half slowly and again Royal capitalised. Following a counter, Donna Shimmin superbly controlling the ball, turned 180 degrees and unleash a long-range dipping shot that found the back of the net for a superb goal.

Island and Corinthians’ manager Michael Quilliam changed tactics, playing three at the back as his side went more direct. This was rewarded in the 64th minute when Jade Burden played a through-ball to Lauren Christian who dropped a shot over goalkeeper Rose Ozga to make it 2-1.

Five minutes later, Christian struck again to level the scores directing a shot into the bottom left after seizing on Burden’s deflected effort.

Two minutes later, Burden put Corinthians in front for the first time to make it 3-2, after receiving a pass in from the right she guided a shot across goal into the bottom left. Burden completed her brace in the 76th minute, netting her side’s fourth after side-stepping her marker before striking a low angled shot into the net.

Corinthians kept possession in the closing stages, directing passes into the corner flags to play down the clock, but Chloe Teare came close to adding a fifth with her effort went narrowly over the crossbar.

Victory against DHSOB next Thursday will see Corinthians secure a record sixth league title.
