POLICE are issuing a severe weather warning to motorists as heavy rain lashes the Island.
A spokesman said at 5pm today (Friday): 'Police are advising all motorists to drive with extreme caution due to the current heavy rain and poor visibility.

'It is essential that drivers reduce speed to allow for the conditions and headlights should be used at all times.

'Please take extra care on unfamiliar roads and be vigilant for standing water.

'All roads in the island are likely to be affected and we would ask that any non essential journeys are left until the weather improves. If the journey is necessary please ensure you have sufficient time to complete it safely.'

He added: 'The Mountain Road is particularly hazardous at this time and we would ask that drivers avoid this road until further notice.'

At 6pm, police issued a further warning: 'There is extensive flooding on the Island's roads and certain areas are particularly bad. There is also a large tree down in the road at Ballaspur just up from Ballacraine.'
