A MANX delegation has returned to the Island after attending the 54th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Malaysia – with one MLC having chaired a debate on conflicts of interest and corruption in small states.
David Cannan MHK, Alex Downie MLC and Clare Christian MLC, together with outgoing clerk of Tynwald Malachy Cornwell-Kelly, flew to Kuala Lumpur to represent the Isle of Man for the 10 day conference.
Leader of the Manx delegation Mr Cannan said:
'The importance of the Isle of Man being represented at the highest level of international discussions cannot be overestimated.
'At this conference, every opportunity was taken to promote the Island's economic strength and stability. The hospitality of our Malaysian hosts was exceptional and the delegation returns to the Island well informed on matters that are, or will be, relevant to the well-being of the Island.'
Both Mr Cannan and Mr Downie were able to play a full part in the plenary sessions of the small branches conference that preceded the main conference.
Mr Cannan led discussion on the topic of promoting the interests of small states in the international community while Mr Downie chaired the debate on dealing with conflicts of interest and corruption in small states.
Mrs Christian, as executive committee member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, chaired the meeting of the British Islands and Mediterranean region. She has lost her role as treasurer of the CPA following a vote at the conference but has now been appointed a trustee of the CPA Trust that controls most of the association's funds.
Mr Cornwell-Kelly, who has retired as Tynwald clerk, took part in the conference of the Society of Clerks-at-the-Table in Commonwealth Parliaments.
